The Burmilla breed has its origins in the United Kingdom. It was created accidentally in the early 1980s when a Chinchilla Persian male cat named Sanquist mated with a lilac Burmese female named Bambino Lilac Fabergé. This unexpected union resulted in a litter of kittens that displayed a unique and enchanting silver coat with a sparkling appearance.

Recognising the beauty of these cats, breeders decided to develop the Burmilla breed by selectively breeding them. The name "Burmilla" is a word blend of "Burmese" and "Chinchilla," reflecting the breeds involved in their creation.
