Puppy Insurance

So you have taken the plunge and got that new family member you've been dreaming of? Having an excitable new puppy in the house makes everything more lively but the early days are full of many changes. Maybe there are new dog bowls and toys around the house, maybe a crate, perhaps your now leaving doors closed to block off rooms.. having a new pup brings lots of work and plenty of adjustment but should this change include pet insurance?

What would puppy insurance cover?

This really depends on the policy chosen but typically your policy could include some of the following:

  1. Veterinary bills
  2. Behavioural problems
  3. Lost / theft of your puppy
  4. Liability cover for legal expenses
  5. Death of your puppy through illness / injury
  6. Kennel fees

The above list is just an overview, you would need to check the policy wording of the pet insurance insurance product you are purchasing / have purchased to make sure what you need is covered, not all policies will cover all of these.

The cost of keeping a dog over its whole lifetime adds up, its estimated by the PDSA that the cost is more then £4,600 and that's the minimum for a small dog breed but can be as much £25,000! The larger the dog this goes up higher *https://www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-care-of-your-pet/looking-after-your-pet/puppies-dogs/the-cost-of-owning-a-dog (the PSDA provide pet insurance and their prices can be seen in this price comparison).

What types of pet insurance are there?

Accident only. Will cover your pet in the event of an accident, but won’t cover long-term illness. There may also be limits on the amount of time and money allowed for treatment.

Time Limited. Covers illnesses as well as accidents, but for a limited amount of time only. These policies may also come with a maximum pay-out.

Maximum Benefit. Covers illnesses and accidents up to a maximum amount per condition, but there’s no time limit on how long you can claim for. This can be useful if your pet experiences a chronic or persistent illness.

Lifetime. This is the most complete type of pet insurance available. It covers accidents, injuries or illnesses for the lifetime of your pet, subject to limits as advised in the policy. These policies can include extras such as dental cover and expenses for burial.
