These cats are affectionate and bond well with their human families, making them great companions. They are generally sociable, getting along with children and other pets. Their high energy levels and curiosity keep them active and engaged. Toygers are also known for their gentle demeanor, making them a delightful presence in any home.

Toyger Appearance

Toyger cats boast a striking appearance, with a robust and muscular build that resembles a miniature tiger. Their most distinctive feature is their coat: a beautiful mackerel or broken stripe pattern in black or dark brown against a background of orange or tan. They have a broad, wedge-shaped head, small, rounded ears, and piercing, almond-shaped eyes. Their physique is athletic, contributing to their graceful and powerful movements.

Conditions which affect this breed

Toyger cats are generally healthy, but like many purebreds, they may be prone to certain genetic health issues. These include heart murmurs and feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition affecting the heart. Responsible breeding practices are important to minimise these risks. Regular veterinary check-ups can help maintain their health.

Weird Fact..

The selective breeding for a particular coat pattern is quite rare in the cat world. It involves a detailed understanding of feline genetics and a commitment to achieving a look that is both aesthetically pleasing and remarkably true to the tiger's iconic coat, making the Toyger a unique testament to the possibilities of selective breeding.

Toyger History

The Toyger breed originated in the United States in the late 1980s, developed by breeder Judy Sugden. Her goal was to create a domestic cat with a striking resemblance to a wild tiger, to increase public awareness and support for tiger conservation. The breed was developed by crossing domestic shorthair cats with Bengal cats, a breed already known for its distinct, wild-like markings.

Sugden focused on enhancing the striped patterns to mimic the tiger's coat. The Toyger was recognised by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 2007, and it continues to evolve through careful and selective breeding practices.
