Shar Peis are characterised by their calm, loyal, and independent nature. They form strong bonds with their families, often showing a reserved or aloof demeanor towards strangers, making them excellent watchdogs. Despite their independent streak, they crave affection and companionship from their owners. Shar Peis are known for their intelligence and can be quite willful, requiring consistent, positive training methods from a young age. They are less likely to engage in frivolous play compared to other breeds but enjoy mental stimulation and moderate exercise. Early socialisation is crucial for them to develop into well-adjusted adults, as they can be stubborn and dominant without proper guidance.

Shar Peis are instantly recognisable by their unique appearance, featuring deep wrinkles covering their head, neck, and body, especially noticeable as puppies. They have a broad, flat head with a distinctive hippopotamus-shaped muzzle, small, sunken eyes, and tiny, triangular ears that fold forward. Their coat can be either horse (short), brush (slightly longer), or bear (longest, but rare) coat types, all known for being harsh and bristly. Typically, they come in various solid colours. Their blue-black tongue is another hallmark of the breed, contributing to their distinctive look.

Shar Peis are prone to several health issues, largely due to their unique physical traits. Skin infections are common, given their deep wrinkles, which can harbor bacteria and yeast if not properly cleaned. They are also susceptible to a condition called Familial Shar-Pei Fever (FSF), which causes fever and swelling in the joints and can lead to a serious kidney disorder called amyloidosis. Eye problems, such as entropion, where the eyelids roll inward, causing irritation, are frequent due to their skin folds. Additionally, they may experience hip dysplasia and thyroid disorders. Regular veterinary care is essential to manage these conditions.

The Shar Pei originates from China, with a history that dates back to ancient times, possibly as far back as the Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE). Initially bred for hunting and guarding, they were versatile farm dogs in rural areas, valued for their intelligence, strength, and distinctive appearance. The breed's name, "Shar Pei," translates to "sand skin" in Chinese, referring to their unique, rough coat.

During China's Communist Revolution, the Shar Pei nearly faced extinction due to the government's crackdown on pet ownership. However, in the 1970s, a Hong Kong businessman named Matgo Law appealed to Western dog lovers to help save the breed. His efforts were successful, leading to a surge in popularity in the United States and elsewhere.
