Afghan Hound Character

The Afghan Hound tends to be independent and sometimes stubborn dog. They are not typically clingy and will prefer to spend time on their own. Afghan Hound Appearance

The Afghan Hound is well known for its elegant appearance. They are large dogs that typically weigh between 50 and 60 pounds and stand between 25 and 29 inches tall. They have a lean, muscular body with long, thin legs.

The breeds coat is long, silky, and fine, and comes in a wide variety of colours, including black, cream, white, silver, and many shades of brown. The Afghan Hound has long ears that hang down with long, silky hair.

Afghan Hounds have a unique structure in their footpads that allows them to run on soft sand without sinking. This is known as "sponging" and is achieved through large, cushioned footpads that spread out when the dog places its weight on them. This helps to distribute the dog's weight and prevents it from sinking into soft surfaces.

Genomic studies have confirmed the Afghan Hound as one of the oldest breeds of dog and a member of the sighthound family. They were first bred in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Northern Indian thousands of years ago as hunters to course game across mountainous terrain and benefitted from a being extremely quick and having great eyesight. A vast difference to the typical fashion runway reputation that now follows the Afghan Hound.

The American Kennel Club accepted the Afghan Hound in 1926.
