Yorkshire Terrier Character

Despite their small size, the Yorkie is fairly active, curious and protective. They are an easy dog to train and tend to be either food or praise motivated. They have an air of importance about them due to their confident manner.

Weird Fact..

The smallest dog in recorded history was a Yorkshire Terrier named Sylvia, she died in 1945 just two years old. Sylvia measured 6.4cm tall at her shoulders and 8.9cm from nose tip to tail. She weighed just 110g.

Yorkshire Terrier History

Breeding of the Yorkie was mostly in Yorkshire and Lancashire by workers in mines and the cotton / wool mills in the area. Scottish workers came to the area in the mid 18th century with several varieties of terrier which were know at the time as Broken Haired Scotch Terriers. Three dogs names Old Crab, Kitty and another female with name unknown where the original Broken Haired Scotch Terriers. In the 1860s a Yorkshire Terrier named Huddersfield Ben was born, he was a show dog and competed in ratting contests, he was one of the most popular stud dogs of the era and won 74 prizes in his career, he produced most of the foundation stock of the current Yorkshire Terrier.
